Abstract: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) has been an increasingly used therapeutic strategy to improve the outcome of advanced gastric cancer (GC) over the past few decades. Lymphocytic infiltration has been reported to be associated with response to NACT, but the...
Hyperbaric oxygen as an adjunctive therapy in treatment of malignancies, including brain tumours.
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is widely used as an adjunctive treatment for various pathological states, predominantly related to hypoxic and/or ischaemic conditions. It also holds promise as an approach to overcoming the problem of oxygen deficiency in the poorly oxygenated regions of the neoplastic tissue. Occurrence of local hypoxia within the central areas of solid tumours is one of the major issues contributing to ineffective medical treatment. However, in anti-cancer therapy, HBO alone gives a limited curative effect and is typically not applied by itself. More often, HBO is used as an adjuvant treatment along with other therapeutic modalities, such as radio- and chemotherapy.
Systematic review of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of radiation-induced skin necrosis.
Abstract: Every year, 1.2 million cancer patients receive radiation therapy in the United States. Late radiation tissue injury occurs in an estimated 5-15% of these patients. Tissue injury can include skin necrosis, which can lead to chronic nonhealing wounds. Despite...
Pneumatosis intestinalis during chemotherapy with nilotinib in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia who tested positive for anti-topoisomerase I antibodies.
Abstract: A 55-year-old man with several comorbidities including idiopathic interstitial pneumonia under long-term corticosteroid therapy, longstanding myocardial infarction, chronic heart failure, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, gastro-esophageal reflux disease,...
Ocimum gratissmum aqueous extract reduces plasma lipid in hypercholesterol-fed hamsters.
Abstract: Objectives: Hyperlipidemia is a significant risk factor in the development of atherosclerosis and related diseases which are major health problem in many developed and developing countries that can lead to fatality due to the changes in lifestyle and dietary...
Simulated Microgravity Disrupts Cytoskeleton Organization and Increases Apoptosis of Rat Neural Crest Stem Cells Via Upregulating CXCR4 Expression and RhoA-ROCK1-p38 MAPK-p53 Signaling.
Abstract: Neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) are a population of multipotent stem cells that are distributed broadly in many tissues and organs and are capable of differentiating into a variety of cell types that are dispersed throughout three germ layers. We are...
Targeting hypoxia to overcome radiation resistance in head & neck cancers: real challenge or clinical fairytale?
Abstract: Tumor hypoxia is a major cause for failure of therapy in patients with inoperable head and neck cancers. Various anti-hypoxic treatment strategies (e.g. hyperbaric oxygenation, hypoxic cell sensitizers) have been tested in clinical trials in head and neck...
Hyperbaric Oxygen as Radiation Sensitizer for Locally Advanced Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oropharynx: A Phase 1 Dose-Escalation Study.
Abstract: To explore, in a dose-escalation study, the feasibility of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatments immediately before intensity modulated radiation therapy in conjunction with cisplatinum chemotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN)....
Preoperative Glasgow Prognostic Score as additional independent prognostic parameter for patients with esophageal cancer after curative esophagectomy.
Abstract: Inflammation accelerates tumor growth followed by reduced survival in patients with cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic relevance of preoperatively increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and the corresponding Glasgow Prognostic...
Endocan reduces the malign grade of gastric cancer cells by regulating associated protein expression.
Abstract: Endocan, which has been identified to be low expressed in gastric cancer, was found to be positively related to the differentiation level of gastric cancer in vivo and in vitro. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the role of endocan in gastric...
