WATERBURY — The Wound Healing Center at St. Mary’s Hospital has upgraded its hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers. The original HBOT chambers were recently removed, and the brand new chambers were installed over the course of the last week.
The hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers deliver 100 percent oxygen at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure (sea level).
The two new chambers will replace the Wound Healing Center’s original chambers that were installed when the center opened in 2004.
The chambers are used to treat more than a dozen medical conditions including diabetic foot ulcers, osteomyelitis of the bone, radiation injuries to tissue and bone such as cystitis, necrotizing infections, compromised skin grafts and skin flaps, some types of arterial insufficiency, and ischemia.
Each treatment lasts approximately two hours. The number of treatments is determined by the physician. Most patients receive between 30 and 40 treatments.
“I’m very proud of the work we are doing in the Wound Healing Center and excited about bringing the latest technology to St. Mary’s,” said Peter Jacoby, M.D., medical director of the Wound Healing Center.
“We’re focused on cutting-edge treatments and therapies, as well as proven techniques and procedures to ensure our patients are receiving the best care possible, and these new HBOT chambers will help us do that.”
The Center has been recognized several times as a Center of Distinction by Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. To earn the recognition, the Wound Healing Center achieved outstanding clinical outcomes for twelve consecutive months, including patient satisfaction rates higher than 92 percent and a minimum wound healing rate of at least 92 percent.
