Abstract:
Erectile dysfunction (ED), defined as the inability to achieve or sustain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse, is common in men older than 50 years of age whose medical history includes diabetes mellitus. This case report describes a male patient treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy as part of a comprehensive wound treatment plan for an open right foot wound. The patient’s medical history included Type 1 diabetes mellitus and chronic ED refractory to previous trials of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. The patient completed a total of 60 HBO₂ treatments over a 15-week period. He reported an improvement in his ED symptoms after the first 20 hyperbaric treatments, with morning tumescence being the first sign of a change. Patient continued to report morning tumescence 24 weeks after final HBO₂ treatment.
